Day 24: Loch Torridon to Portree, Isle of Skye

Tuesday 1st May
ETD 0900, CTS 210, 23nm

Awoke to a becalmed and beautiful Diabaig bay in the sunshine; high cliffs above, trees determined to prove they can grow; small stars glistened in the sun, starfish in the kelp and a jelly.

No wind to sail we motored off to Skye; today it was all blue sky and demanding of the sun lotion. The fishing boats looked at leisure pottering on the mirror sea. We headed for a north cardinal boy marking rocks at the top of Raasay Island, about 10 miles, before dreading south again down the Sound of Raasay against Skye. Phenomenal views of the Cuillin Ridge, some Porpoises and a Golden Eagle!

Sailed past The Man of Storr on Skye, one I attempted to hike 23 years ago only to climb the wrong outcrop!

Entered the charming port of Portree to be greeted by the lifeboat man showing us a solid mooring for the night. First stopped on the wharf to refuel, take on water and visit the town whilst one of the crew called on the doctor. The Coastguard, Harbour Master, fish merchant and all helped us with the victualling! Enjoyed this fabulous place place, cups and ice cream too. Left quay at 1600 to take up the lifeboat's secondary buoy for the night; at least this one won't need a anchor watch!
