Day 10: Amble the Kindliest Port

So hailed the Captain of the Mauretania in 1935. The port is protected by the lighthouse on Coquet Island built in 1841; the Siren of last night! In 684 Cuthbert met Elfreda, Abbess of Whitby here to accept the Bishopric of Lindisfarne.

Seems we'll be weathered in here for the day because the Synoptic charts show a depression slowly moving south across the Irish Sea; impacting us all with the winds. Good shelter in Amble Marina from the gale blowing over. Next plan is to saunter around the Farne Islands and ideally anchor off Holy Island tomorrow. Just have to wait on the weather which might favour us in the early hours.

Took the opportunity for a good walk up river with Stella to the C12th Warkworth Castle, home to the Percy's and young Hotspur. Pictured in the distance off the prow of the boat and another with me over the gatehouse. Actually very impressive because most of the Keep's stone floors and rooms remain intact. Warkworth is a very pretty stone village with classic castle, church and square on the bend of the river with C14th bridge. Amble too is a pleasant harbour town with its busy high street of traditional local stores. Picked up a Pepsi Max 6 pack for a fix, and we picked the right spot to get weathered in. I'd best set to the galley now to prepare the meal for tonight.
